Blogging: self presentation and privacy

I found this article on Blogging and self presentation and privacy to be quite fascinating and the author made some valid points as well. I really enjoyed how three different privacies were discussed which were informational privacy, accessibility privacy, and expressive privacy. Informational has to do with one's control over their privacy and assesses the content the blogger chooses to use. Accessibility has to do with physical proximity, how it "protects against traditional privacy violations, such as a house being wiretapped, or a family consistently being watched by a neighbour's telescope" (Information & Communications Technology Law, 2008,5). The third of the privacies discussed was expressive privacy which discussed how people choose to act freely upon social interactions and interactions. Another main idea and section I noticed in this article and that I found to be intriguing was Table 2 on page 9 which showed reasons why people blogged and the main reason was to show(document) personal experiences and share them with others. I personally agree with this because I know people who want to start blogs and pursue them because they want to express things going on in their daily lives that they find are imperative and what to share it with others and hope others can relate to what they are discussing. I believe that is a great idea, because one of bloggin's main purposes is an outlet for people to talk about things they want others to see and try to make a difference, to have others see it from their point of view, so that they can possibly relate to it, and believe in something.

  1. I know what you mean about people using blogs because they want an outlet, a way to express themselves and talk about the things that they find important. I have definitely known many people who have felt this way. However, I find that fewer and fewer people are turning to blogging for that outlet, and more and more are getting what they need through social media. Facebook, for instance, gives people the opportunity to talk about what’s on their mind without having to sit down and engage in the sometimes intimidating task of “writing”. Social media is so much more conversational, and for that reason I think it is much more accessible for a lot of people. I think the trend away from blogging and toward social media will only increase as time goes on.

  2. I am one of those people who blog because I want to document my personal experiences. I write for myself more so than I do for others. I want to write down experiences so I won't forget them in the future. I can look back and remember. Blogging is just like journaling except it's quicker, and obviously less private. I think blogging is definitely an outlet for self-expression because people can write about whatever they want. Bloggers may be able to send out their messages more effectively depending on how many people read their blogs. I see blogging as a creative outlet as well because people can post images and artwork on there in addition to writing out thoughts. Those images still represent a part of their personalities. It's interesting to me how some people are able to make money from blogging.
